Abstract
For the paramount scientific award, “Nobel Prize in Physics”, ~40% achievements are in optics and photonics. Optics and photonics are deeply embedded in our daily life nowadays. They enable so many industries, markets and applications! From the most popular smart phone to the upcoming virtual/augmented reality and driverless car, they are ubiquitous.
Optical communications, as the backbone of today’s information technology infrastructure, supports voice, video and data transmission through global networks. One critical issue in its research and development is the challenge of meeting the needs of increasing the data capacity without compromising size, weight, power and cost (SWaP-C) constraints.
The speaker will share his photonics journey in both academia and industry. The talk will first present academic research on terabit-scale fiber and free-space optical communications using orbital-angular-momentum multiplexing. Furthermore, latest industrial development on packet-optical engine will be discussed.
Biography
Yang Yue is a Hardware Engineer at Juniper Networks in USA. He received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and the M.S. degree in Optics from Nankai University, Tianjin, China, in 2004 and 2007, respectively. He received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, USA, in 2012.
Dr. Yue’s current research interests include Integrated Photonics, Free-space and Fiber Optics, Optical Interconnect, Optical Communications and Networking. His research on “orbital-angular-momentum mode division multiplexing in fiber” has been published by Science. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed journal papers and conference proceedings, 6 invited papers, 1 book chapter, 15 issued or pending patents. Furthermore, he has given ~30 invited presentations.
Dr. Yue is one of the recipients of the 2011 IEEE Photonics Society Graduate Student Fellowship and 2011 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad. He received the Department Spotlight Award from Juniper Networks USA in December 2016. He has been selected to 2014-2016 Edition of “Marquis Who's Who in America”, 2015-2016 Edition of “Marquis Who's Who in the World”, “IBC Top 100 Engineers 2015”, and “IBC Top 100 Professionals 2016”.
Dr. Yue is a Member of the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc), IEEE Photonics Society (IPS), the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), Optical Society of America (OSA), and the Photonics Society of Chinese-American (PSC). He is the Editor Board Member for two scientific journals. He also served as committee member for ~20 international conferences, reviewer for ~40 prestigious journals, and reviewer for OSA Centennial Special Events Grant 2016.
