Precision measurements using cold-atom interferometry is becoming closer to reality. Measurement of gravity and magnetics fields using these techniques are being demonstrated with very large gains in sensitivity projected for the near future. For the most part these experiments are laboratory scale and can not be transported to measure in different locations. Atom chips offer the intriguing possibility of miniaturising these experiments to such an extent that they become portable. In these experiments, atoms are trapped near a substrate with current carrying wires that produce the magnetic trapping potentials.

In Singapore's Centre for Quantum Technology, we have designed and built an experiment using a new multi-layer atom-chip platform which could in the future be used to provide all the magnetic fields required with no external field coils, dramatically simplifying cold atom experiments. To demonstrate this possibility we have made a compact prototype atom-chip with an in built magnetic conveyor belt to move our atoms around the chip surface to an area with integrated fibre optics. In my talk I will present our design, and show you are latest results using the conveyor belt, as well as our experiment to probe the atoms with the on-chip optics.
