报告摘要:

The talk will present a review of modeling and simulation at Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology, especially about high-quality laser ablation of glass.

Display manufacturers are striving to thinner and harder display pushing conventional cutting processes to their limits. Milling and laser ablation with ps-pulse duration become recognized as promising solutions. However, there are gaps in understanding the mechanisms involved in laser ablation, especially issues related to cut quality. This work describes the advances in modeling and diagnosis of cut quality and performance. Ablation and damage in glass result dominantly from beam propagation and nonlinear absorption. A limiting shape for the ablation front and a maximum ablation depth for large pulse number are revealed by model analysis and experimental evidence. The model predicts three different kinds of spatially distributed damage depending dominantly on shape and morphology of the ablation front.

Wolfgang Schulz represents the department "Nonlinear Dynamics of Laser Processing" at RWTH Aachen University and is the head of the department of "Modelling and Simulation" at the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology in Aachen. Since 2007, he is the coordinator of the Excellence Cluster Domain "Virtual Production" at RWTH Aachen University.

His current work is focused on developing and improving laser systems and their industrial applications by combination of mathematical, physical and experimental methods. In particular, he applies the principles of optics, continuum physics and thermodynamics to analyze the phenomena involved in laser processing.
