Abstract:

Light propagation in dispersive nonlinear materials can exhibit optical domains: these are regions with different stable static states that lead to the minima of the Hamiltonian. A domain wall is a kink soliton which represents a switching between different domains. First predicted by Zakharov and Mikhailov in 1987 [1], optical polarization domain walls were theoretically extensively investigated. However, it was only experimentally observed with counter-propagating beams in nonlinear isotropic fibers [2]. In this talk, I will briefly review the theoretical works on the polarization domain walls and domain wall solitons, as well as the black-white soliton pair formation in weakly birefringent single mode fibers, and then demonstrate that the theoretically predicted domain wall solitons can be easily realized in single mode fiber lasers. I will show that based on the domain wall soliton formation in a laser, one can build a dark pulse emission or dark-bright pulse emission laser, which are new laser operation modes that have never been demonstrated before.
