   Abstract:
Omega EP Laser built in 2008 at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE), University of Rochester, is a four- beam, kJ-class, laser facility capable of reaching intensities in excess of 1020 W/cm2. The primary applications of the Omega EP are for laser-fusion and high-energy-density matter studies. The system delivers both, nanosecond (1-10 ns, UV) and picosecond (1-100 ps, IR) pulses which creates specific challenges for different optical components.  Many of these challenges are linked to mechanical stress, laser damage, and optical performance of coatings in vacuum environment. Special area of concern is laser-damage performance of meter-scale multilayer dielectric  (MLD) gratings used for laser pulse compression.  Major obstacles here related to ps-pulse damage driven by residual contamination from lithographic manufacturing process. In the ns-pulse, UV part of the Omega EP system, HfO2/SiO2 based optical coatings are exposed to higher fluences as compared to the coatings previously developed at LLE for Omega, 60-beam fusion laser.  That creates need for coatings with higher damage thresholds and better understanding of the damage mechanism and nature of precursors initiating UV, ns-pulse damage. In this presentation we will provide overview of the Omega EP laser system, discuss current performance and challenges with main emphasis on laser damage subject.  Recent results on nanoscale absorber studies in HfO2 monolayers using high-resolution photothermal heterodyne imaging and atomic force microscopy will be also presented.
