Abstract: We discuss the van der Waals interaction of neutral atoms with the internal and external surfaces of metal or dielectric micro and nano bodies such as nano-spheres and nano-cylinders. We show how the van der Waals interaction energy can be derived in an electrostatic approximation and show how the energy increases or decreases as a function of the atom’s distance from the curved surface. We also discuss influence of the van der Waals interaction on the spontaneous emission of atoms near curved surfaces and properties of the atom microtraps for cold atoms.
