Ryosuke Kodama isdistinguished Professor of Osaka University as well as Director of Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University.He received a Doctor Degree on plasma science with high power lasers in1990. Since 2005, he is Full Professor of Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University. He is Director of Consortium for Photon Science and Technology in Japan supported by a project of Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology from 2008, Visiting Professor of Kyushu University from 2012 and, Visiting Chief Researcher of RIKEN SPring-8 center from 2013. He is also American Physical Society (APS) Fellow from 2008 and received Doctor Honoris Causa from Russian Academy of Sciences on 2015. 

   Since its establishment in 1972, Institute of Laser Engineering (ILE), Osaka University has contributed to the development of laser science and technology including laser fusion. ILE has developed high power laser systems such as GEKKO XII and LFEX worldwide science then.ILE, as a nationwide collaborative facility in 2006, is positioned as a joint research collaborative research center in 2010 and provides the high power laser facilities to all researchers both in Japan and abroad. Using these laser facilities, we have developed laser fusion and high energy density plasma physics and opened up a new field of science such as laser astrophysics and plasm photonics. In 2017, ILE has restarted as one of the distinguished institutes in Osaka University and will cover more broad area of laser science such as solid state physics and material science in extreme stats and laser accelerator science under collaboration with an XFEL facility (RIKEN SACLA) in Japan. I will introduce this new ILE in the seminar.
