Research Laboratory for High Density Optical Storage(RLHDOS)in Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics(SIOM), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was established in 1985 by Prof. Fuxi Gan, academician of CAS, and now becomes one of the most important R&D centers for information storage in China. At present, there are altogether 16 staff members including 1 academician of CAS in the Lab. About 30 postgraduate students for their Ph.D. or M.S. degrees and post-doctoral researchers are now working in this laboratory. The total area of the Lab. is about 700 square meters.
RLHDOS is engaged in the R&D of new materials for optical storage, design and preparation of the multi-layer structure, mastering, testing and evaluation, application of optical discs and super-high density optical storage.
RLHDOS is also paying close attention to new developments and trends in optical storage and keeping its ever-growing intention all along in mind to achieve super-high storage density and data transfer rate. Now the Lab. puts its emphasis on new materials and devices for hybrid recording, phase change random access memory, super resolution near-field optical storage, digital holographic optical discs, molecular optical storage as well as physical fundamentals of nano and ultra-fast data storage.
Under the guidance of Prof. Fuxi Gan, RLHDOS has established an R&D platform for high density and super-high density optical storage, and accomplished 30 key projects financially supported by the National Science and Technology Commission, Chinese Academy of Sciences, National Natural Science Foundation and Shanghai Municipal Government, respectively. 11 scientific achievements have been rewarded by the central or local governments. Up to the present, more than 800 scientific papers have been published in domestic or foreign Journals and Proceedings, and more than 80 students have received their Ph. D or M.S. degrees at the Lab.
RLHDOS has been providing strong support to the National Engineering Center for Optical Discs and Applications. It has also formulated extensive and close relationships with universities, research institutions and industries, aiming at promoting technology transfer in the optical storage community.
Since 1988,RLHDOS has successfully sponsored and hosted eight International Symposia on Optical Storage (ISOS), which were all chaired by Prof. Fuxi Gan. Experts, scientists and technologists in the optical community from universities, research institutes and industries worldwide gathered together to exchange experience and new progresses in the materials and technologies for optical storage, to strengthen cooperation and promote friendship. This series of symposium has become one of the influential International symposia in this field.
